Of the big 3 in Japan, only one is still unsure which way
to go because they have Motorola infrastructure and
Motorola is playing the wait and watch game on 3G (maybe
they have something else up their sleeve).

W-CDMA is for new spectrum while CDMA2000 and EDGE is for
the old spectrum. HDR is a pretty good option for the old
spectrum and maybe not 3xRTT. W-CDMA is the frontrunner
and is beating out everything else for the new spectrum.
There are no contracts for any other technology that I know
of for the new spectrum.

QCOM seems to promote HDR as opposed to 3xRTT for data
since they have it on their chip. Given that the path
for data is still divided for CDMA2000 it will be a while
before it is commercially available. Add to it the fact that
North America lags Europe and Japan in data. From what I
know, W-CDMA and CDMA2000 are both expected to grow at
35% to 40% every year. W-CDMA and EDGE are going to
consolidate GSM and TDMA. Given that the percentage of
CDMA subscribers in the world is 10%, you can figure out
where most of the sales will be.

BTW, I work on CDMA2000 :)
