OTTAWA, March 30 /CNW-PRN/ - Nortel Networks (NYSE/TSE: NT) has completed a series of landmark third generation (3G) wireless calls, including the industry's first wireless packet data sessions using cdma2000 1XRTT.
Using a Unified Networks infrastructure solution from Nortel Networks and advanced cdma2000 terminals from Samsung, Nortel Networks completed 1XRTT voice calls this week in a live, over-the-air environment in an end-to-end technical trial of IS-2000 standard protocols.
Nortel Networks successfully demonstrated in-building, pedestrian and vehicular calls for representatives of Bell Mobility and Sprint PCS over a trial network installed in conjunction with Bell Mobility in the Ottawa suburb of Nepean.
Bell Mobility and Sprint PCS also witnessed the first 1XRTT wireless packet data sessions, completed in Nortel Networks' Ottawa labs using Nortel Networks' Shasta 5000 Broadband Service Node to provide the Packet Data Serving Node functionality.

Nortel Networks and Samsung have been working together since June 1999 to develop solutions for evolving wireless networks quickly and cost-effectively to 3G CDMA radio technology. 1XRTT, the first phase of cdma2000, will support 144 kilobits per second packet data transmission and enable operators to effectively double voice capacity.
