>>If Iomega is having problems making the Zip disk drive small enough for a laptop, then who's to say they won't have problems developing the no.hand disc drive small enough for portable devices, and keep the cost of it down? People like these portable devices because they are generally inexpensive, small, and durable. Even if the no.hand drive is 1/2 the size of a Zip, it would still add considerable bulk to these devices whose appeal rests in the fact that they are small. Flash technology keeps the size of the portable device tiny. A disc drive would not. <<

Rocky -

Did you doze off for a while there?

Iomega has stated that the only problem they are having with the 12.7 mm Zip drive, the smaller of the two notebook-size drives, is in selecting a thinner motor. Motors from various manufacturers are being evaluated, according to KE's statement on the conference call.

The size of the n.hand drive has already been stated to be around the same as a PCMCIA card. (I'm assuming that they mean a Type III card.) So the device would add little more to the overall size of a portable camera, or whatever, than Flash memory slots do. As n.hand disks will be much smaller than Zip disks, it will not require as large a motor to turn them.

Yes, the cost of flash will come down. But how soon do you predict it will be anywhere near 50 to 75 cents a megabyte?
