Boot camp is merely a distillation of subterranean male society. If you cannot take the abuse handed out by your DI, you are a washout, unfit to take your place in the ranks, of no use to yourself or others. You have proved you are nowhere near being able to handle the rigors of battle. Similarly, at a primitive level male society is continually testing you, seeing if you are tough enough, trying to make you tougher, so that you can handle things "under fire", and be relied upon........
