Robt. Timberg has a good take on this in "The Nightingale's Song." In writing about rigors imposed on lowest classmen at the Naval Academy he reports that the system is set up to give people "too much" to handle and observing how they handle it.

Excellent book, BTW -- esp. in light of John McCain's recent exposure to the limelight.
