It is faster to look at the intermediary caches...even if you get a miss....than skipping them, unless you know they are a miss.

My point was that with small L2 cache (in addition to big L1), the improvement in hit ratio by adding a small L2 would be small, and you would incur a penalty of the lookup.

I wasn't aware of this thing called victim cache, which Scumbria explained in another post. That would make more sense for Athlon than regular L2, because of Athlon's fairly big L1.
