"Excite@Home Plans a Cheaper Broadband Service."

Hi Craig- This is a smart move by ATHM. As the demand for cable broadband lessens in certain markets, this $20 service will definitely attract the tightwads. I wonder if "test-market" means only certain cities? Or will it be offered nationwide? I would not offer it in areas where there is pent-up demand, and the KBs of the world are frothing at the mouth for the service. Let them pay the $40. Sorry, KB, but I know you want the speed anyway. Besides, as an ATHM shareholder, you will soon have no money problems.

Excite@Home raises the bar again. What is AOL dialup worth now? I DO think this new service option will attract AOL & other ISP dialup subscribers. It will also pressure DSL to lower their prices.

It seems to me that there is plenty of competition in Internet high speed access. And Portland was worried consumers would get screwed. The writing is on the wall. Prices will come down, subscribers will have an ISP choice, and there will be a cafeteria menu available for customers with various service needs and budgets. The open, unregulated Internet market is taking care of itself.

I realize this is not a press release, but why does positive news like this always come late on a Friday? Haven't they heard that timing is everything?

Have a good weekend!

Ed
