The management change could foreshadow a sale of the company,said John Hodulik, an analyst at PaineWebber Inc. who has a``neutral' rating on e.spire

He compared e.spire to IXC Communications Inc., which brought
in a chief executive last May and agreed to be bought in July by
Cincinnati Bell Inc. E.spire ``has attractive fiber networks in a
number of cities throughout the southern U.S., so they would make
a logical candidate for an acquisition.'
