This weeks Business Week (4/10/00) has and article called "Get Those Files Out of Here" which talks about StorageNetworks proposal to sell storage to corporations as a service, instead of a product they must service and manage. According to the article this will put heat on EMC and others storage-equipment makers. EMC has decided not to enter the storage-as-service business according to the article, dismissing it as a threat, since StorageNetworks buys its equipment from EMC. But according to StorageNetworks EMC could end up getting less feedback from storage users, which could hurt its ability to develop cutting edge products. Is it possible that this is what caused investors to bail out of EMC over the last two days. I can't imagine corporations risking all their confidential files by giving this information to someone outside the corporation to do their storage.
Any comments?
