Little know fact - MSFT holds most of the cards here. No way was Bill Gates going to agree to either breakup or cripple MSFT. MSFT using a full appeal strategy could hold off a final adjudication probably until yr 2002.

MSFT may in fact be a de facto quasi monopoly in ONE segment of a much larger computer related universe, however, it is clear to most that the benefits of standardization far outweigh any alleged harm to competitors. Point is MSFT on balance is a benign monopoly.

Larry Ellison's plan to have 3 versions of windows - would have been highly destructive to consumers, although quite a windfall for Oracle and the world of giant servers.

Glad that Gates did not cave in here.
