There is going to be one hell of a shakeout in the online health information arena as soon as the mostly ignorant mass investing public realizes that there are simply too many companies chasing too few advertising dollars, with not much of any consequence distinguishing one site from another. Sure, drkoop is a nice site, but so is webmd, and discoveryhealth, and onhealth, and intelihealth, and....
The eventual winners in the field will be the companies that not only come up with unique ways to attract and keep eyeballs at the site, but can offer visitors something that they'll be willing to pay for as well. One day, in order to survive, these static information-providers will have to demonstrate that they have the capability of showing a profit, and it's clear to me that advertising revenue alone is simply not gonna do it. -Eric |
