not really--news not unexpected That is my feeling after I read of MSFT's offer of separating Windows and Explorer. My question then was--would the government agree that Explorer is free or would they insist upon a lower price for the browserless Windows. That is what i believe was probably the sticking point. That point would be revisisted many times down the road as things like speech recognition technology is introduced. MSFT realized that the government would be deciding what goes into Windows for a long time if they settle the case right now. I think they decided the alternative of appealing was better. Their lawyers were not that good in courtroom theatrics but I would bet they are much better than the DOJ in the legal aspects. I still go back to the statement by the lead lawyer on the MSFT side when he was asked a question recently--he said---"the law is the law". It had a high degree of confidence in it.
