Had a chance to attend the public session of the AACR conference in San Francisco today. The public session of course was really tuned to cancer patients and their families.

There was an initial presentation on some of the research that is going on. They talked about angiogenisis, monoclonal antibodies, and the latest technology that I've seen some other press on already which is engineering viruses which attack only the cancer cells. Although the presentations were interesting, there was really nothing that we weren't already aware of.

There was one presentation by a survivor of pancreatic cancer. She was 36 years old at the time she got the cancer and the biggest issue was initial diagnosis. This is one topic that I really haven't paid too much attention to. But one of the big factors with any cancer is initial diagnosis. There are only about 5 or 6 cancers with any sort of screening technologies that are able to pick up the cancer. By the time she was diagnosed, she was already in Stage IV (the cancer had spread throughout the body). She was treated with Gemcitabine and 5-FU and managed to make a recovery (although how long is anyone's guess). Apparently, out of 28,300 new cases of pancreatic cancer each year, only 100 will live to see the next year!

I'm really hoping that Immunogen's drug is successful in trials. It really is heart-wrenching to see what some of the people with cancer are going through. What a horrible disease. One thing about Immunogen's drug is that even though a lot of people are diagnosed with cancer only after it has spread throughout the body, it is the type of drug that still may give these people a chance.

Sorry there was nothing really ground-breaking to report. Hope was the main theme for today's presentations. I'm sure the real ground-breaking information will come out of the information sessions and conferences to be held over the next three days.

I suspect there will be quite a few newsworthy items coming out of the conference over the next few days from a number of different companies.

Good luck to all!
