WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., Apr 1, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- The founder of
the anti-Microsoft movement, Florida U.S. Senate candidate Andy Martin, said
Saturday night that he believes negotiations between Microsoft the federal
government and state attorneys general will resume shortly. Martin's sources
within the antitrust legal team brief him regularly on developments.
"I spent many years in Chicago. I know Judge Posner and his court intimately. I
am sure the judge is frustrated. But I also know his doors remain open to
resuming mediation.
"Five and a half years ago, I became the first consumer advocate in cyberspace
when I formed the Committee to Fight Microsoft. I do not think Microsoft
realizes just how badly their situation has deteriorated in that period.
"First, the Department of Justice is not acting alone. There is accountability
between Justice and the attorneys general.
"Second, there is now technical competency at the state level. Five years ago
when I began to energize state attorneys general, none of them had any
capability involving computers and cyberspace. I changed that. Individual
attorneys general can fight for their views. Thus, Microsoft is outgunned, and
may not yet have accepted that fact.
"The see of Microsoft is a wealthy place, a powerful place. The bishops of
Redmond may not be prepared to accept discipline from the lowly serfs who serve
in government. This is not going to be 1994 all over again, where Microsoft
rolled over the federal government. Archbishop Bill Gates better hear the 'all
aboard' siren, or he is likely to be left behind," says MARTIN.
Martin Spokesperson Cheryl Wells said Martin is monitoring the Microsoft
situation but is also considering whether to switch to the Reform Party to run
for the U.S. Senate. Martin is also monitoring the Elian Gonzalez situation,
where Martin is expected to take action April 3rd.
