Dell Back In the Chips Wired News Report 10:25 a.m. Mar. 27, 2000 PST

There is such a thing as being too successful. Dell Computer found this out when demand for its personal computers outstripped its ability to supply parts, resulting in shortages that fouled the company's earnings for two quarters. Now, according to a top exec, Dell has surmounted its supply problems and pronounces itself comfortable with its earnings projections for both the first quarter and the fiscal year, which ends next January.

However, Mort Topfer, a Dell director, told a technology conference in France that there is the possibility that memory chip shortages could occur again later this summer.
Shortages of memory chips, along with notebook computer screens and advanced chips from Intel, torpedoed Dell's performance in the last two quarters.
