Qwiksand, did you lighten up that MSFT position whenever it was you were re-thinking it?

I sold half my MSFT position and spread the proceeds around into everything from nutso-techs (e.g. ADBE, PMCS and INSP) to munis. I also bought some way OTM MSFT calls in the event there actually was a settlement, which I never thought there would be. MSFT is so powerful it's hard to bet against them no matter what. Looking at the MSFT thread, there seems to be a lot of disagreement about how strong the cases of third parties will be after the ruling. I certainly don't know.

As to how the MSFT development will affect SUNW, I do have an opinion about that: mu. SUNW has already moved into a zone where its fate is much more dependent on the execution of its own strategy and the release of its own new products than on the vagaries of the MSFT/DOJ case. That's been pushed into the noise because of E12000/US3/Star Portal/Storage and etc. etc. all the rest of the things that aren't happening that should be. I personally am growing pretty impatient with months of pissant Jini announcements but no new high-margin strategic products, combined with Zander statements about "not seeing anything competitive on the horizon", a blooper that I hope doesn't come back to haunt him.

This "breakaway year" is a disappointment so far, not because of the stock price but because of the becalmed strategic movement. We'll find out in the next couple of weeks how bad things are going to get. If help comes, don't look for it from the courts or the DOJ, look for it from SUNW product announcements (real ones that is, not irrelevant whizzbangs or penny-a-ton Java licenses), earnings and conference calls. The ol' 1-cent-surprise trick won't amuse much this time around.
