"Sony's age of e-capitalism
TOKYO -- Sony is out to prove it can do it all -- the sexy, wired, financial stuff that's making the information-age convergence so turbulent and dynamic. This week, the consumer-electronics giant (SNE: news, msgs) accelerated plans to reinvent its empire, setting plans for a new broadband-entertainment holding company, finding blue-chip financial partners for its online banking initiative and possibly spinning off its Internet-access service to shareholders. Sony signed up Japan's Sakura Bank Ltd. and U.S.-based J.P. Morgan & Co. as shareholders in the online bank it hopes to launch next year. Next up could be a PlayStation2 that lets folks blow away video-game ninjas in one stroke, and trade stocks online in another. The game plan is to wrap a range of information, financial-services, and entertainment functions into its next-generation machine. Before long, Sony could be the diversified behemoth that regulators in the United States sometimes fear Microsoft will become."
