But look at MS Office. That was free at one time, but now that Microsoft's monopoly is established in the office suite, Microsoft charges quite a bit of money, because they're free to do so.

When was Office ever free? I've used Word since Word 2.0 and I never received it free. No company I worked at received it free. Maybe you are referring to MS Works which comes free on most the machines I've purchased. Believe me, this is not MS Office.
