There is an in-depth, optical overview, The Optical Future, at: lightreading.com

The intro seems to do a decent job of putting many of the ongoing optical discussions into an overall context although it is focused on the carrier perspective. The article also lays out some of the challenges of deploying optical technology. I found the graphics particularly helpful and there are loads and loads of links.
