Subj: The November Issue's Sony Piece Date: 11/10/99 To: editor@wired.com CC: davidsheff@yahoo.com, rants@wired.com Dear Editor: I read the Sony piece in your latest issue of Wired with great interest. Despite the fact that the title page photo has the Sony CEO holding up a "Memory Stick" on the tip of his finger there is precious little information in the body of the article that expounds on the potential of removable flash memory. I also took exception to the fact that the Memory Stick was referred to as a "Sony creation," because the technology packed into that little piece of plastic actually stems from core research in flash technology by several other companies. Moreover, I do not believe flash memory architecture is a competency the CSL at Sony has even dabbled in, let alone mastered. I expressed my concerns about the fact that SanDisk, a key innovator in the flash memory arena, has had very little exposure in the technology press in a rant at this URL... Message 11839496 On our SanDisk Thread at SI (Silicon Investor) we have grown accustomed to being overlooked. In fact, a rather high profile piece in the NY Times "Circuits" section all but left out any mention of CompactFlash and MMC, the fastest growing and arguably most promising form factors in removable flash memory. The information contained here assumes you have a basic knowledge of Geoffrey Moore's book entitled "The Gorilla Game". The discussion is constructed to draw parallels with several chapters in his book and highlights non-volatile memory applications in the digital photography market.
