LITTLETON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 3, 2000--MRV Communications Inc. (NASDAQ:MRVC) today announced that it has delivered its first large revenue order of the Red-C Open Subscriber System (OSS) to a leading service provider. The Red-C is the first product on the new Red Sea product line designed specifically for service providers. The Red-C is a Subscriber Service platform that provides subscriber authentication, access control and Quality of Service (QoS) management to service providers. The device typically manages subscribers' traffic from aggregation devices such as DSL multiplexers (DSLAMs), Cable Modem Termination Systems (CMTSs) or Ethernet Switches, feeding it into Internet access points at the service provider's location. After a subscriber is terminated at the Red-C, the session is configured with the appropriate QoS attributes and privileges, and routed via an uplink to the Internet or corporate destination. The subscriber can access the provider via an analog modem, DSL modem, cable modem, or via anEthernet fiber or wireless link to the home. This offers universal service provisioning to a provider that is independent on the customer's connection media. It allows a provider to support multiple connection media types and a migrationpath to newer connection technologies. Mary-Jane Gruninger, vice president of engineering at MRV, commented: "Differentiating services will be key in the near future of service providers. Real-time traffic prioritization, on-the-flyservice provisioning and packet level accounting and billing functions, are some of the service providers applications that will be realized most effectively with an open architecture and high-performance real-time processing." John Freeman, vice president of the Fearless Group, a high-tech analysis and consulting firm, commented "In addition to service selection, the Red-C solution enables service providers a range of value-added, high-margin IP-based services such as VPNs, firewall, and VoIP."However, perhaps even more compelling for service providers is Red-C's open architecture approach. This approach leverages third-party development/customization, allowing service providers to build a subscriber system that fits their own, unique 'best practices' and creates a differentiated broadband service offering." Noam Lotan, president and CEO of MRV, commented: "We are confident that the Red-C product line will add to the already established success of our In-Reach product line, and confirm our penetration into the service provider/carrier market. Our ability to provide a complete solution to manage broadband subscribers and the elements that serve them, creates substantial revenue opportunities, as already witnessed from our expanding list of carrier customers." Red-C Product Features
The Red-C Subscriber product is offered as a 4 or 16 slot chassis that is suitable for telco environments. The 16 slot chassis can be configured with a variety of I/O cards -- ATM-OC3, ATM-DS3, 10/100 Ethernet, clear-channel T3/E3 for Frame Relay or PPP links, T1/E1, 120 port DSP cards for Voice over IP or analog modem access and VPN hardware that supports a full IPSec implementation. With the built-in full routing capabilities of RIP, OSPF and BGP4, a service provider can use the Red-C as its routing connection to the Internet. The routing architecture is distributed so that the intelligent I/O cards perform the forwarding function locally. This, together with highly efficient subscriber record accessing algorithms, gives a cost-effective subscriber system with excellent performance. The Red-C has been designed as an open architecture based on three levels: the core, interfaces, and applications. These layers are designed to ease the integration of third-party applications. This gives the service provider the opportunity to offer revenue-enhancing services by adding applications to their Red-C system.
