Maybe. But adults are required to understand, and act upon the realization, that the theory is fiction. People don't operate that way. The basic premise of socialism - and its pure form, Marxian communism (before Lenin's bastardization) - is utopian and thus without "traction". All attempts to realize it fall into a corruption that invariably exceeds the corruption it was intended to remedy.

There is a balance, an uneasy tension, behind the social contract and the individual entitlement ("rights"). Going to far to the left yields an oppressive and ultimately unstable rejection of innovation, not to mention a breeding ground for dynasty. Going too far to the right yields an oppressive and immediately unstable pit of road warrior tribes.

Altruism is at current a long-term, organized, intellectualized variety of self-interest. Altruism without a self-interest underlay is insane: maladaptive, an aberration.

We won't unravel this Gordian knot until we gain the ability to make our meat in our own image. Total genetic mastery. Because to change our meat is to change our destiny. And SOME of the changes are bound to be good, after the fascinating/horrifying orgy of evolutionary contest has run its course. This is for sure: it'll be a heck of a show.
