AsiaInfo Connects China's Four Major National Internet Backbones
AsiaInfo's NAP Project Increases Internet Speed in China
SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 3, 2000--AsiaInfo Holdings, Inc. (Nasdaq:ASIA - news), a leading provider of Internet infrastructure solutions and software products in China, today announced that it has commenced its Network Access Point (NAP) project to directly connect China's four major Internet backbones for the first time. The project will dramatically increase China's internetworking speed while reducing access costs to ISPs and end users.

Currently, there are eight major national backbones in China: four commercial backbones including ChinaNET, UniNET, CNCNET, ChinaGBN as well as four other non-commercial backbones: CERNET, CSTNET, CGWNET and CIETNET. So far, four of these backbones (ChinaNET, UniNET, CERNET and CSTNET) have been connected through this NAP site in Beijing. The rest of the backbones will also be connected to this NAP in the near future.

Historically, interconnections among different backbones in China were routed through international gateways, which have low capacity and high costs. The introduction of the first Chinese NAP will allow networks to eliminate this bottleneck and interconnect directly. The current NAP project has increased interconnection bandwidth from less than 8Mbps to over 100Mbps, enhancing network bandwidth to over 10 times previous levels.

``We are pleased that the Ministry of Information Industry (MII) chose AsiaInfo to play the leading role in this dramatic advance in China's Internet network infrastructure,' said James Ding, CEO of AsiaInfo Holdings, Inc. ``By directly connecting China's major Internet backbones, AsiaInfo is making the Internet faster and more affordable to users across China than ever before. We expect the construction of these NAP sites in China to further boost Internet usage in this already rapidly growing market.'
