CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 3, 2000--LifeF/X, Inc. (OTCBB:LEFX), a Safeguard Scientifics, Inc. (NYSE:SFE) partnership company and developer of photo-realistic, 3D, digital human faces for the Internet, today announced the appointment of Stephen J. Andriole, Ph.D. to its Board of Directors. The experienced strategist will serve as an advisor to the company as it prepares to bring its "Stand-In" technology to the Internet later this year. Andriole currently serves as senior vice president and chief technology officer for Safeguard Scientifics, Inc. Previously, he was chief technology officer and senior vice president of technology strategy for CIGNA Corporation, the $20 billion global insurance and financial services company, where he was instrumental in the strategic alignment of enterprise information technology investments with CIGNA's multiple lines of business.
Recognized for his project management expertise, Andriole was director of the Cybernetics Technology Office (CTO) of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), where he managed a $25 million program of research and development. He was instrumental in a number of important scientific and technological advances in the broad-based information and computing sciences and initiated the development of spatial database systems, management and multimedia systems, decision support systems, computer-aided simulation systems as well as training and intelligent technology-based systems.
Andriole founded International Information Systems (IIS), Inc., a company that designs interactive systems for a variety of corporate and governmental clients and specializes in the analysis and prototyping of the design of user-computer interfaces and software systems evaluation.
As a highly regarded scholar in systems engineering, Andriole is the founder and former director of George Mason University's Center for Multidisciplinary Information Systems Engineering and served as Chairman of the University's Department of Information Systems and Systems Engineering. He has also authored 28 books, including Interactive Computer-Based Systems Design and Development, Microcomputer Decision Support Systems and Applications in Artificial Intelligence.
