Seriously, that really is a legitimate concern, and it could make some farmers dependent on the huge agribusinesses. But, if we accept that software companies can protect their product from being copied, recording companies take steps to prevent unauthorized reproductions, and inventors can patent their gizmos, shouldn't the same be allowed for agri-companies? The choice for the farmer is whether to make money on a bumper crop or save money by using un-engineered seed.

The real danger, seems to me, is if (huge 'if') the sterile seed becomes all that is available (like a Microsoft monoply? <g>).
