Sun Unveils Unique Dual Interface Networking Card
Sun Delivers Industry's First Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel-Arbitrated Loop Adapter
PALO ALTO, Calif., April 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) today announced a new network interface card that conserves valuable server slot space and reduces costs by 32 percent. The new card is the first in the industry to combine -- on one PCI adapter -- both Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel-Arbitrated Loop (FC-AL) capabilities.

Together, the Gigabit Ethernet and the FC-AL provide the performance, bandwidth and high-dependability connections crucial in today's demanding network infrastructure. The Gigabit Ethernet portion of the combination card gives users the same reliable performance as the standalone card, providing support for full and half-duplex interface connections. The FC-AL portion of the combination card offers high bandwidth storage connectivity to scalable high-capacity storage arrays such as the Sun StorEdge(TM) A5000.

Additional Combination Card Features and Benefits

Additional features of the new combination card include:

-- Easy integration with existing network infrastructure.
-- Full compliance with IEEE standards and FC-AL specifications for
interoperability among vendors.

"The Sun (TM) Gigabit Ethernet FC-AL/P Combination Adapter is an ideal choice for organizations in need of reliable performance, low cost of ownership, adaptable capabilities and overall flexibility in network systems," said Christopher A. Lawrence, group marketing manager, Network Products, Sun Microsystems. "The compactness of the card and its low cost provide a leading-edge technological advancement in today's network server market.

Combination Card Pricing and Availability

The Sun Gigabit Ethernet FC-AL/P Combination Adapter, available immediately, is priced at $2,995. Customers who do not require the combination card may continue to buy the Sun Gigabit Ethernet 2.0 PCI (X1141A) Adapter priced at $2,095 and the Sun FC-AL PCI (X6729A) Adapter priced at $2,300.
