Judge finds Microsoft broke U.S. antitrust law <<WASHINGTON, April 3 (Reuters) - A federal judge ruled Monday that Microsoft Corp. (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news) broke U.S. antitrust law by abusing its monopoly in personal computer operating systems. District Court Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson said Microsoft violated key parts of the Sherman Act, a finding that will lead to consideration of penalties over the coming months that could include breakup of the software giant. ``The court concludes that Microsoft maintained its monopoly power by anticompetitive means and attempted to monopolize the web browser market,' Jackson wrote in a 43-page ruling. In findings of fact issued in November last year, Jackson had already found that Microsoft's behavior hurt consumers, computer makers and other companies . Settlement efforts in the case brought by the Justice Department and 19 states collapsed Saturday when a mediator said he could not bridge wide differences between the parties after four months of effort.>>
