By "dumb" I mean Bill thought he was bigger than the marketplace, that he wasn't subject to the rule of innovation that governs high-tech businesses. For many years I felt all MSFT products were inferior to competitors. Now I think IE5 is the best (only because Netscape was dumber) and Windows 2000 is probably OK. Yes, very smart at marketing, but customers look at their own bottom lines, and as years pass, unless you have a true monopoly (which MSFT doesn't) the word gets out that there's a better, cheaper, more reliable solution. And the word has gotten out...
