1) Is it important to allow partners/customers to access the corporate network in a secure, manageable fashion?

2) Is it important to extend services (securely & manageable) to your customers and partners that will benefit the relationships?

3) Is the investment in your current network reliable, scalable and extensible enough for the new economics of the Internet?

4) Do you want a solution that will accomodate many platforms and services? One that you can develop value-added services for your clients, partners and users?

Well I accused Scott of being abrasive here and I hate to offend anyone (for those that know me your saying "what") but I guess I'm going to be a hypocrite and be abrasive. Before I start I swear PJ I'm not trying to offend you but your post has triggered me to what to stand on my chair and shout. No I'm not standing on a soapbox but I'm literally standing on a chair right now with keyboard in hand. My dog is nervous right now and doesn't know what to think right now as I tower over him. This simple act has triggered my dog emotionally such that he does not know what is forthcoming. By the way this is the exact reason why I stand on a chair is to get this type of reaction.

To be truthfully honest PJ your questions sound generic with the right industry buzz words. These questions sound like questions Novell would think up. This is the problem there is no excitement these questions bring to the table. Actually the problem is not your questions its the products themselves that don't lend to the excitement.

Imagine me being the blue M&M. Imagine Novell marketeer being that Baldwin brother. Just like the commercial the sales pitch does not move me, I show the Novell guy to the door "To bad, so sad, but thinks for playing".

Yes you could be a successful company being conservative and constantly meeting earnings but to be truly great you have to generate excitement and passion about your company and your products. If you look at directory services even the name is a fallacy and lends no excitement.

Every marketeer at Novell needs to write on their whiteboard "Sex Sells" a gizillion times. I'm not talking literally about sex but the emotions that sex has on a individual's mind. If you can generate that type of emotion and passion about your product then you have reached marketing NIRVANA.

I can name 8 people that I know in the SLC city area that can get me excited about different facets of my life and things I'm involved in personally. In 9 years at working at Novell I can only name 1 person (Drew Major) that generated that type of excitement at work for me. Actually I never communicated that much with Scott but I could imagine him generating passion from those he talked to. What Novell needs is people willing to stand on a chair and take a risk.

This reminds me of another chair story that occurred to me last fall. While negotiating price for my Corvette (honest truth) I stood on chair and asked their chief negotiator is "SUCKER" written across my forehand. You wouldn't believe the number of people running over to see what was going on. I got my audience, I delivered my message, I rattled them senseless (actually if your a 9-ball player I just executed a perfect stun shot with forward stagger), and I got the price I wanted.

The first company that can bring excitement to DS will be the company going home with the girl and the dough.

Stepping off chair now and resuming semi-normal behavior before I turn into Fred. I guess my chair act didn't work on my dog it's whining and wants to go outside and get away from this nut.

One last final note, I will never ever work for any boss that can't stand on a chair (I mean this literally he has to be able to stand on a chair) and move me. Vice versa I would never hire someone including myself) that couldn't stand on a chair and convince me to hire them. I know this seems to violate one of my software principles in being too heavy in one personality trait but not really. Most people would consider me quiet but also most people would also consider me very passionate. If your not passionate then you have nothing to bring to the table.

Again sorry PJ my tirade was not directed at you. Most of the people contributing to this forum (including yourself) are chair standers. (I think Fred is standing on Mt. Everest).

As I review this message for spelling I see it doesn't really contribute much but I'm posting it anyway. I guess those that attended BrainShare and listened to the Novell speakers did you get the feeling that they were chair standers. I'm not looking for names but for the overall feel of the conference. Hmmm I wonder if the name www.chairstanders.com is registered yet. Without looking I bet $20 that some chairsitter has registered my freaking name.

Later
