I think that if the LCD display was off, the time difference is even more dramatic. Playing back mp3 is basically reading sequential data. With random access (typical of many computing tasks), the mechanical movement on the microdrive will draw even more power.

I can't remember where, but I saw projections elsewhere that showed a 3x or 4x power consumption difference between flash and microdrive if we ignore the cpu and display.
