AIIM Standards Committee Proposes Standard for COLD Document Exchange; docHarbor(SM) Takes Technical Lead in Establishing XML as Industry Standard
SAN DIEGO, April 4 /PRNewswire/ -- docHarbor, the leading document application service provider (ASP) and a business unit of Anacomp(R), Inc. (Nasdaq: ANCO), has taken the lead in the Association of Information and Image Management (AIIM) International's Standards Committee by proposing a comprehensive XML (eXtensible Markup Language) standard for COLD Enterprise Report Management (ERM) data interchange. The standard will allow virtually any type of ERM data to be understood and transferred between disparate systems.

The standard establishes an ERM industry-specific XML document type definition (DTD) for data exchange by specifying a common markup format based on XML which encapsulates all forms of COLD data (AFP, Metacode, PDF, etc.). The standard designates a consistent interchange format for data contained in ERM systems, including documents, their associated resources, and retrieval index values. The standard does not propose transformation of all data to a native, normalized XML format, rather, it uses XML as a wrapper for different native formats.
The XML standard was evaluated and selected based on benefits to both ERM users and vendors. By using XML, data can be exported from, and imported to, one standards-compliant system to another. Additionally, disparate ERM systems within an enterprise will be able to exchange or consolidate data. This is the first XML work in the ERM industry, and is expected to pave the way for additional efforts in this area.
"docHarbor is proud to have the opportunity to take a leadership role in proposing this industry standard and we expect it to have far-reaching implications," said Dr. Clyde Hardin, vice president of docHarbor and the primary author of the proposed standard. "docHarbor is already using this approach to support our customers' entire range of documents, delivering an integrated solution that uses the latest technology for document presentment. The XML standard further enhances our ability to manage all types of documents, providing exceptional added value to our customers."
