You're right -- lack of risk control is a skeleton in many cupboards. Lack of _effective_ risk control (i.e., use of poor models) is its insidious twin. However, those who have good models and apply them carefully can do a surprising job mitigating the potential dangers. Since I don't know the details, I can't say where Tiger's operations lay on the risk continuum. Proper application of a solid and stress-tested risk model would have rendered Tiger's exposure lower than you appear to assume; blind speculation would mean they were far riskier. -mb
