The idea of not getting margin call is not to get overextended. In this historic infamy of NASDAQ, even those who think to have set aside enough cushion for a real downturn but got burned becuase of the unprecedented drop. Nobody can consistently predict the bottom. Witness those who bought NTAP, ITWO etc last week thinkging getting bargain prices, only getting caned the past two days. Nibbling may be a better approach: although not getting the max return, but better than getting whipped. Just MHO.
