If you as a cable subscriber want to receive the movies streamed reliably in real-time, you need a specialized VOD server such as the ones we're familiar with (CCUR, SEAC, etc). Run-of-the-mill servers won't do in this case as they can't be relied upon for real-time response/delivery.

Receiving movies over the Internet is still a far-off proposition IMO (2-4 years?), as today only a tiny fraction of U.S. households have high-speed @HOME or DSL service (less than 4% total)... And even having those, video over the Net is still often of small size and spotty quality (as any Victoria Secret's fan knows).

That said, having decent VOD over the Net still won't preclude the traditional MSO/STB model - just like there are a lot of different ways and mediums we get our news everyday (TV, radio, print, Internet), there's room for a number of customer choices in how to view VOD.
