OK - I will back of on Parish a little... the point you are making (MSFT is in fact a special case because of the combination of big options and profits against which exercise of those options can be charged) may wash with AOL, but what about INTC, CPQ, DELL, CSCO and other profitable giants which also make heavy use of options?

The problem IMO is not in the way MSFT or any of these companies use options, but in the GAAP rules which make those methods more attractive than straight incentive bonuses from a tax and income perspective. Change the rules and they would change the game.
