Aware?s Perspective on Lucent's DSL Con Announcements

04/05/00

At the DSL Con show in San Jose, Lucent Technologies made two important announcements about its WildWire? ADSL chipset. Those separate announcements were:

Customer Announcement. Korea-based Samsung Electronics Company will use Lucent?s ADSL modem chips in their desktop Personal Computers. Samsung expects their PCs to be on store shelves and shipping to their customers in this year?s second quarter. In addition to Samsung, Lucent?s ADSL modem chipset customers include Compaq, Dell, and Hewlett-Packard.

Product Announcement. Lucent has made available a chipset solution that enables three different modem-based Internet services using a single chip. Lucent?s Wildwire? solution equips personal computers and standalone modems with V.90 analog, G.lite, and full-rate ADSL functionality. Lucent?s new chip conforms to applicable ITU and ANSI standards.

These announcements prompted telephone calls to Aware asking if the ADSL technology behind these products was ours. The answer is yes. Our ADSL technology underlies the G.lite and full-rate ADSL functionality in Lucent?s chips. Obviously, we are pleased when our customers make product and customer announcements that demonstrate their success based on our technology.

Equally important, Lucent?s announcements also demonstrate industry trends that are important to our business. These trends are:

Global market ? The ADSL market is a worldwide market and not simply a U.S. phenomenon. The Asian market is one of the world?s fastest-growing ADSL markets, and Lucent?s presence there through Samsung and others further demonstrates the global nature of the market as well as the versatility of their ADSL chip solutions.

Multi-mode solutions ? As the ADSL market continues to evolve, we believe that there will be a requirement to offer multi-mode chipset solutions. Chips that incorporate both full-rate ADSL and G.lite will be critical to success. Lucent?s new chip is the first solution that combines V.90, full-rate ADSL and G.Lite in a single chip for personal computers.

Importance of both ITU ADSL standards ? We believe that the International Telecommunications Union?s G.lite and G.dmt standards will play an important role as the market continues to develop. The commitment by Lucent and equipment companies around the world to both standards speaks to the value of global standards when there are mass markets to be served.

Role of the consumer electronics industry ? We have long held that the consumer electronics industry would be crucial to the mass deployment of ADSL services. As more and more PC companies offer ADSL equipment, the industry moves closer to reaching a mass consumer market with broadband services. Lucent appears to be committed to leading the PC market with leading edge chipset solutions.
