Oracle's "network appliance" refers to some kind of terminal that connects to the internet and somewhat bypasses the need for Microsoft's software. I doubt that they are referring to a "network appliance" as in network attached storage as provided by NTAP.

There are two issues here.

The first issue is that yes, Oracle has been promising the "NC" (Network Computer), an appliance box that doesn't need Windows, nor anything very robust in terms of OS. It's what they called a dumb terminal back in the old days. They have been promising this NC thing for the past what, five years. Beware of this type of promise from Oracle. They seldom deliver, and Larry Ellison is Silicon Valley's #1 producer of empty hype.

The second issue is that Oracle does put out something called Raw Iron, that is an Oracle data storage appliance, and (correct me if i'm wrong, DS) does compete with NTAP filers. Furthermore, they are collaborating with EMC and Cisco on SAN standards. This is where the potential threat to NTAP is, not the vaporware of the "Network Computer."
