Gustave, Emerging national identity actually gave us "America" as well. Remember that America was nothing more than a former British Colony untill the great westward expansion known as "Manifest Destiny" swept aside the millions of Native Americans to create what we now call "America". If you ask non American what they think of when they think of America, its "cowboys" or the west, or the west coast with Baywatch. America is not identified by New England anymore. Our national identity came from "winning the west" or ethnic cleansing as the concept has come to be known. In fact, I think one reason why Bill Clinton (the most politically correct President ever) never says anything about the horrors of genocide, ethnic cleansing, and oppression done to the Native Americans is because it would sound "unpatriotic" to complain about what was actually the major formative years of the American identity. However, he can whine all he wants about slavery and the horrors of it because it was before the west was one and began with the colonies. It was someone else's identity. So there ya have it...America, one great hypocritic land! -John
