The law often is an ass.

I suppose it depends what kind of law you are talking about. There are laws passed by legislatures, and the fiats of kings, there is "common law" like that in England and the US and then there is the kind of "taboo" type law more primitive societies have.

I don't think you can make any general pronouncements about how well all these laws promote some concept of the human being- especially when LOTS of laws have religious origins- where God (whatever God or gOds you might want to throw in the mix) might be trying to squash certain human "rights"- like the right to inseminate all the women you want - for example, or for a woman, the right to sleep with as many, or whatever men, you wish. These laws vary greatly all over the world- I find no really cohesive theme in their "goodness" or fitness for the human animal, and his beingness- with such inconsistency confronting me I can't conclude much- except that man is inconsistent, and quirky.
