I was surprised to learn that Nortel does not have a "Sonet multiservicing platform" to compete with the Sonet MSPP which Cisco acquired from Cerent although they do have an ATM MSPP. Nortel's next acquisition may be a Sonet MSPP. The various startups and their technolgies are discussed at:

lightreading.com.

Cisco may have been the first major vendor to snap up a Sonet MSPP. It won't be the last. The list of telecom giants that may find it easier to buy one of these companies than
develop its own solution includes Alcatel, Fujitsu, Lucent, Nortel, and Sycamore-to name just a few.
