Nickel-Based Batteries Power Up Today's Electronic Devices
SAN ANTONIO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 3, 2000--The demand for rechargeable Nickel batteries has never been stronger.

In today's battery-powered world, rechargeable batteries have become essential to maintain the functionality of application devices and the productivity of business professionals.

According to new strategic research by Frost & Sullivan (www.frost.com) ``U.S. Nickel Battery Markets,' this market generated $904.6 million in revenues in 1999. This market is expected to grow to $1.22 billion by 2006.

Nickel batteries continue to retain a large portion of application markets, including the cellular phones and power tools segments, however, newer portable applications are expected to require batteries with capabilities greater than those of Nickel batteries.

Nickel batteries will continue to be implemented within a variety of applications for the U.S. markets. Applications include portable instrumentation and telecommunications centers that utilize Nickel batteries for backup power. Although Nickel batteries will gradually diminish in the mobile IT communications and telecommunications markets as a preferred choice, they will thrive in the consumer product market, namely in power tools and cordless phones, and in the industrial market, such as portable measurement devices. Notwithstanding a downward pricing trend influenced by a growing number of Nickel battery players, the U.S. Nickel battery market continues to be strong in terms of unit shipments.

``Many applications currently utilize and will continue their usage of Nickel batteries. Although newer chemistries are progressively entering the market, existing applications powered by Nickel batteries are not immediately making the transition to these newer chemistries,' states Frost & Sullivan analyst Dora Fong.

``The capabilities within each Nickel chemistry currently satisfy specific applications that newer chemistries cannot easily do. This is a reason why Nickel batteries are still greatly demanded in the U.S.' The specific advantages of Nickel batteries, including lower price, will stall the immediate and rapid movement of power sources to newer chemistries.
