US' ADVANCED MICRO JAPAN JT VENTURE MAY BUILD CHIP PLANT

TOKYO, Apr 06, 2000 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) -- Advanced Micro Devices Inc has set its sights on a 39% increase in sales of microprocessors for personal computers to 25 million units in 2000, Chairman and CEO WJ Sanders says.

The US microchip maker is also considering construction of a new plant for flash memories at its Japanese joint venture with Fujitsu Ltd (TSE:6702) to meet demand from mobile phone manufacturers, Sanders said.

Total monthly output at the joint venture's two plants currently stands at about 24 million memories.

AMD supplies chips for everything from high-end servers to bargain PCs, putting it in direct competition with market leader Intel Corp.

The company beat its larger rival to the punch in March with the release of a 1-gigahertz microprocessor and expects a special focus on high-performance processors to give it 30% global market share by 2001.
