Rich: It's a plausible scenario. My wife was at the SEC in Oct. 1987, and I know there was a lot of behind-the-scenes scurrying to stop the bleeding. What happened yesterday can't be explained only by the buy-the-dip phenomenon. I've been known to buy the dip occasionally, and what I was feeling yesterday was that the Big K had just hit.
