>Re: PMC-Sierra Announces Terabit Chip Set

ray.

this particular chipset, the TT1 (Tiny Terabit One), is actually an AAnetcom product (acquired last month along with Extreme Packet Devices).

of course, PMCS' terabit switch fabric has also come from the Abrizio acquisition. regarding AAnetcom, they already have 10+ design wins for their quad and octel chips most likely from Cisco. although their developers have LU/Bell Labs heritage, they got their hands greased by Cisco (kids)! (but not really deserving of an exclamation given the rampant incestuousness in this space.)

to wit, culled from a CSFB report:

"AANetcom came to the attention of PMCS through its Carrier Switching Division Group (Abrizio). This CSD group found their Tiny Tera product (TT1) on reference board designs side-by-side with AANetcom's octal serial backplane. They noticed that AANetcom's gigabit/terabit backplane was very effective in relieving a significant amount of power dissipation issues or the "power bottleneck" since it works at only 1.25 watts. Soon the two companies began working together to ensure their chips worked well together and began making calls to customers together. In partnering with such companies to ensure interoperability, these "buddy calls" also help PMCS evaluate cultural and technology compatibility. AANetcom currently has more than 10 design wins and we estimate that volume revenue will ensue in the late 2001 period."

hope this helps,
-chris.
