INTEGRIS Health Realizes Substantial Return on Investment from Cerner Solutions
PR NEWSWIRE - April 06, 2000 12:43
KANSAS CITY, Mo., Apr 6, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Cerner Corporation and INTEGRIS Health today announced substantial annual savings in operating costs at INTEGRIS through its use of Cerner's clinical systems solutions. Cerner (Nasdaq: CERN) is the world's leading clinical healthcare information systems company. INTEGRIS Health is the largest Oklahoma-owned health system, with 15 hospitals and numerous care facilities.

The study, led by nationally recognized consulting firm IMG, documented the savings INTEGRIS derives through the deployment of Cerner's clinical information systems. The analysis focused on a small, targeted area (approximately 20-25%) of the broader deployment of Cerner applications at INTEGRIS. Based on this analysis, it is conservatively estimated that INTEGRIS derives more than $3.5 million in annual savings in the areas analyzed. Of these savings, 74 percent are attributed to decreased labor costs, efficiency gains and patient safety enhancements, while 26 percent are attributed to improved and more appropriate reimbursements.

"I estimate that INTEGRIS has achieved $14 to $18 million in total annual savings through our Cerner systems and accompanying management interventions," said Avery S. Cloud, INTEGRIS CIO and Vice President of Information Technology. "Further, and more importantly, we have realized substantial clinical quality improvements," said Cloud. As an example, INTEGRIS utilizes Cerner's innovative Discern Expert(R) clinical decision support solution, which prevents adverse incidents and improves patient safety.

"In addition to the substantial benefits of improved efficiency, quality of care delivery and patient safety enabled through HNA Millennium, this third-party analysis identifies the significant financial benefits that can be realized by progressive healthcare organizations such as INTEGRIS when they use Cerner's integrated information technology," said Jack A. Newman, Jr., Cerner Executive Vice President.

INTEGRIS, the first implementation site for Cerner's revolutionary HNA Millennium(R) information systems architecture, successfully integrated information throughout its nearly statewide health system of 15 hospitals and numerous care facilities including rehabilitation centers, physician clinics, mental health facilities and independent-living centers. "Cerner's comprehensive suite of integrated information systems connects INTEGRIS facilities in numerous locations, providing our clinicians with vital information at the point of care so they can make the best patient care decisions from the clinical, quality and cost perspectives," said Cloud.

"Cerner's enabling information technology makes healthcare smarter," said Newman. "The information architecture that INTEGRIS implemented gives its clinicians tools to go beyond the episode of care and proactively manage the health of its community."

"We believe consumers will increasingly demand the benefits of higher quality care via paperless technology, and health systems must balance this demand with the significant financial pressures of the current marketplace," said Neal L. Patterson, Cerner Chairman and CEO. "This benchmark study confirms that both consumers and health systems receive mutual benefits in terms of increased care quality and organizational efficiency through strategic investments in Cerner solutions."

Newman and Cloud will present "Getting Value from IT Investments and Going Paperless" on Monday, April 10 at the 2000 HIMSS Conference in Dallas, TX. For editorial opportunities, please contact Ashley Davidson at 816-201-1580.
