FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
JOEL SCHWARTZ NAMED PRESIDENT OF EMC's DATA GENERAL DIVISION HOPKINTON, Mass. - April 6, 2000 - EMC Corporation, the world's leading provider of intelligent enterprise storage systems, software and services, today announced the appointment of Joel Schwartz as President of its Data General division, reporting to Joseph M. Tucci, EMC President and Chief Operating Officer. Schwartz, a ten-year veteran of Data General, has played a key role since EMC's acquisition of Data General in 1999 and brings continuity as EMC leverages the assets and talents of the Data General division for the greater benefit of EMC.
As President of Data General, Schwartz, 57, will lead approximately 3,000 employees in the areas of product development, manufacturing, marketing, sales and services. Data General will continue to operate as an independent unit of EMC. Schwartz succeeds Robert M. Dutkowsky, who will leave to take a senior position outside the storage industry. "This appointment is a natural extension for Joel and EMC. Joel has great knowledge and passion for both the Data General server and the storage businesses," Joe Tucci said. "Joel managed the development of CLARiiON, the strongest product family in the midrange storage market, and made his mark as a strong leader and general manager inside Data General. Joel will continue our work in forging a strategic link between EMC's storage expertise and the incredible wealth of talent in the Data General server business." Tucci added, "Bob Dutkowsky made a valued contribution to EMC and the staff of Data General by taking the reins at Data General in the most important and exciting transition in DG's history. In Bob's six months running the DG division, we accomplished the integration within EMC, formulated Data General's strategic positioning and continued strong execution in the marketplace. We are thankful for his hard work and wish him well in his new endeavor."
Joel Schwartz said, "I'm excited about this opportunity to execute on the strategy laid out six months ago. The blueprint remains the same - to both continue the drive for leadership in DG/UX and NT server consolidation and leverage DG's technology to build and create new markets for EMC."
While with EMC, Joel has served as EMC's Vice President of CLARiiON Research and Development. In this role, Schwartz has provided EMC with strategic product leadership and direction for the company's midrange line of storage systems and software.
During his ten years at Data General, Schwartz held a series of executive positions, including Vice President and General Manager of the AViiON division as well as Vice Presidential roles in Sales and Marketing. He began his career with Digital Equipment Corporation, where he held management positions in sales, marketing and general management. Prior to Data General, Schwartz also served as President and Chief Operating Officer of Polygen Corporation. Schwartz holds both bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical engineering from Case Western Reserve and is a graduate of the Stanford University Executive Management Program.
