A quote from today's personal technology column in WSJ

"Processor Speed: This is the most heavily hyped measure of a PC's value, but it's so meaningless today it's pretty close to a scam. Listen up: For the mainstream user doing typical tasks, a processor running at 800 megahertz won't provide any discernible improvement in your computing experience over a processor running at 500 MHz, as long as you have ample memory and all other factors are equal. You also won't be able to tell the difference between using a Pentium III or using a Celeron or an AMD chip. Don't pay a penny extra for a processor faster than 500 MHz, which is about the slowest offered now in a typical name-brand PC. "

This is the first time that I can recollect mainstream media using "scam" to discuss the MHz issue. As more people realize this the consumer and business product mix will increasingly shift to the low-end.
