MCI Worldcom's Sidgmore on Sprint Wireless Business: Comment

Los Angeles, April 6 (Bloomberg) -- The following are comments by MCI WorldCom Inc. Vice Chairman John Sidgmore on the proposed $139 billion acquisition of Sprint Corp., demand for wireless Internet access, and Internet usage patterns.

Sidgmore spoke at the spring Internet World trade show in Los Angeles.

On the acquisition of Sprint:

``We have a lot of analysts writing reports about why we want to buy this and a lot of complicated charts. It's really very simple. We bought this because we want the Sprint PCS wireless business. It isn't so we could sell voice service to consumers over wireless phones, although that is part of it. We did it because we strongly believe data over wireless will be the next explosion.'

On regulators:

``I seem to spend a disproportionate amount of time explaining to regulators why our acquisition of Sprint is a good thing for America. I guess after 75 acquisitions they are a little skeptical. I know a lot of people don't like Microsoft but I want to go on record as saying `Thank God for Microsoft,' because if not for them, we'd be the most hated company in America.'

On wireless:

``Wireless is one of only two significant things in communication. One is the Internet and one is wireless. Wireless Internet will be the next big explosion over the next couple of years.'
On Internet usage:

``There's a myth that everyone is on the Internet. Even in America not everyone is on the Internet, and it's worse in foreign countries. Only in Finland do you have significant usage. When it's 40 degrees below zero every night there's not much else to do in Finland.'
