The lord of the rings is technically 1 massive book, but the original publisher wouldn't go for it in one volume. So they made three volumes:

The fellowship of the ring
The two towers
The return of the king

The Hobbit is kind of an introductory work to ease into the "real thing". (I think).

One day I was browsing in a barnes & noble and found a red-leather bound single volume lord of the rings. It has full size maps along with language details, histories, etc. The entire cover is emblazoned with runes... beautiful.

I had to buy it.
