AsiaInfo gets network deal in China

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- AsiaInfo Holdings' shares climbed 18 percent Thursday after the company announced it is going to build a nationwide Voice over IP network in China for China Unicom.




Once completed, the network will carry 8 billion minutes of long distance calls per year. AsiaInfo (ASIA: news, msgs) says the network will be the largest in the world.

"We are committed to working together with customers like China Unicom to bring high quality, reliable and cost effective IP telephony services to customers all over China," said James Ding, CEO of AsiaInfo.

AsiaInfo develops, markets and supports internet infrastructure software and technology to China's internet and telecommunications service providers.

The company moved its operations from the United States to China in 1995, and is working to develop China's first national commercial internet backbone: ChinaNet.

AsiaInfo Holding's shares closed 8 11/16 higher at 59 7/16 Thursday
